Our History

Marshalls traces its beginnings back to 1956, when Alfred Marshall gathered a small group of innovative entrepreneurs and retail pioneers in Beverly, Massachusetts. Together, they opened a single store and launched Marshalls as one of America’s first off-price family retailers. By purchasing manufacturer overruns and irregulars directly from the major department stores, they were able to pass dramatic savings onto customers. Offering an ever-changing, wide assortment of brand name fashions at 20-60% less than department store prices, Marshalls attracted throngs of bargain-minded shoppers and grew rapidly.

The company went public in 1981, allowing us to expand our footprint nationwide throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Major acquisitions added further momentum, including the purchase ofjwt, Brooks Fashion Stores and Linens n’ Things. By the early 2000s, Marshalls operated over 700 stores from coast to coast and had cultivated an avid customer base enticed by the “thrill-of-the-find” treasure hunt shopping experience.

In 2006, Marshalls was acquired by The TJX Companies, joining sister brands TJ Maxx and HomeGoods to create the nation’s largest off-price retailer. As part of TJX, Marshalls has experienced phenomenal continued growth. Major initiatives have created a true omnichannel shopping experience via our e-commerce website and mobile app alongside over 1,100 stores. Strategic brand partnerships now offer customers access to even more coveted designers at our unmatched values.

After over six remarkable decades in business, Marshalls remains as committed as ever to delivering exciting brand name fashions, home décor, beauty products and more at prices our shoppers love.
